For mother's day, my mom wanted a sculpture of my dog, so I made her one. It's super fluffy, er... pointy. I was really unsure of how I would ever make something actually look like our dog, and my starting point was so scarily unlike her I was afraid. But then it just sort of started coming together, I was really pleased.

It's all done in sculpey with a wire armature and tin foil base. some of the fur was cut out of flattened sculpey and some of it was carved into the clay with a needle tool. And everyone agrees it looks a lot like her, so I'm really pleased.

She was also given a glossy coat to make her look shiny like her fur does in real life, as requested by mom, though that made it hard to photograph.

Did you paint the eyes, or did you make them/buy them?

I made them. I just baked little balls of sculpey ahead of time and painted them brown then stuck them in the head. I guess I could have just used them unbaked, but they tend to mush out of shape and it's easier to just stick the baked ones into the head and then sculpt around them when I know they wont squish.

Ah ok. I think i'd be afraid of losing them xD How long did you bake them for? I just finished my fist sculpture today, and I don't like painting eyes on anymore.

I'm not quite sure how long I baked them. Probably only like 5 minutes, but then they sat in there and cooled for awhile which probably baked them a little more as the toaster oven cooled down.

I tend to bake my stuff at 225 or 250 instead of 275 and just bake it for longer because I have burned a few sculptures before. I find at lower temperatures it doesn't ever burn, it just takes longer. It also lets me forget about it since my oven wont turn off when the timer is done sometimes. It's stupid.

Wow, this is really good. O.O You could possibly take commissions to do sculptures of people's dogs for them.

Haha I would totally do that, it's fun. But it helped I could call raven in whenever I needed to see a different angle.
